Hi,
I have some ideas to help improve the rating system for the Webstore. Let me know what you think.
Thanks
1. Localize the Star Rating Display by Region
The visible star
rating (e.g. ★★★★☆) should reflect only reviews from users in the same
geographic region as the viewer. Many extensions work differently
depending on country (due to legal, infrastructural, or language
factors), and global averages can be misleading. By localizing the
rating, users get a more accurate sense of the extension’s performance
in their specific region.
2. Decay the Weight of Old Reviews Over TimeOlder reviews often reflect outdated versions of an extension that may no longer be relevant. Introduce a time-based decay model where the influence of a review on the average rating diminishes gradually over time (e.g. after 6 months). This helps ensure that the rating reflects the current state and performance of the extension.
3. Remove the Option to Sort by Exactly 5-Star Rated ExtensionsCurrently, users can sort search results by "5 stars," which surfaces extensions with a perfect rating. In practice, these are usually niche or new extensions with very few users and minimal review, never the best or most reliable options. This creates a misleading impression of quality. Instead, change the filter to sort by “Top Rated (4.5+)” to prioritize extensions with high ratings and sufficient review volume. This provides a more balanced view of what’s popular, trusted, and proven at scale.
